Gingivitis or the inflammation of gums is the first stage of gum disease. It is often characterized by red, swollen, and / or bleeding gums. While poor oral hygiene is generally the main cause of gingivitis, there are other reasons resulting in this disease including hormones (a.k.a. pregnancy induced gingivitis) or diseases such as diabetes. Oral hygiene instructions and a thorough cleaning from Dr. Chan and his team will put you in the right direction.
Periodontitis is when bone loss is observed and often in addition to the inflammation of gums. It is generally caused by a prolonged accumulation of plaque. Treatment for gum disease may include scaling and root planing, antibiotics, and, in more severe cases, surgery. When conservative treatments such as scaling and root planing and laser therapy are not effective, a specialist referral to the periodontist may be made.
